Auckland based BT Plumbing and Gas Ltd ask ‘Is your plumbing ready for the Christmas holidays?’

Holidays came be tough on your home plumbing. Local experts, Auckland-based BT Plumbing and Gas Ltd advise on the best way to avoid any plumbing mishaps this festive season.

First of all don’t flush parts of meals, cotton balls, swabs, hair or cleansing wipes down a toilet. “They don’t dissolve and will cause clogs. Place a waste basket in the bathroom, so these items won’t be flushed,” advises Bruce Trenwith from BT Plumbing and Gas Ltd.

Not only are toilets getting plugged from more use; garbage disposals are being overtaxed with scraps from big holiday dinners around Christmas and New Year’s. All of that increased volume can lead to the worst plumbing problem of all for homeowners: a clogged main sewer drain.

“If your plumbing has given you trouble in the past, the best plan, is to call for service in advance of the holidays to make sure everything is working properly,” says Bruce.

If you have got the relatives over this Christmas “it’s a good idea to wait 10 minutes between showers, so slow drains have time to do their job,’’ advises Bruce.

In the kitchen avoid putting fibrous, chewy or starchy waste in the garbage disposal such as celery, fruit and potato peels cannot be sufficiently broken down. Also make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. “Run lots of water as you use the disposal and keep the water running for a short time after you turn it off,” says Bruce.

When it comes to plumbing do-it-yourself is off limits. Often, minor plumbing problems turn into plumbing catastrophes if not handled properly by an expert and trained plumber.

Try to address any plumbing problems before the holiday and before guests arrive. In the case of holiday plumbing emergencies, don’t hesitate to call BT Pluming and Gas Ltd to talk to one of their friendly and professional plumbers.

Brace for the summer break with these five plumbing tips from Auckland’s BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd.

Whether you’ve got the family coming over to your house this Christmas, or you’re going away for a summer holiday, there are plumbing matters to be mindful of.

“In the rush and excitement of the festive season, things like your plumbing can easily be overlooked,” says BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd.

“But you don’t want to get caught out. Christmas is a time for family and celebration, not unnecessary stress.”

Here are a few tips to enjoy a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the friendly team at BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd.

1. Get niggly plumbing issues fixed now. You don’t want that minor leak you’ve been putting off to become a fountain smack bang in the middle of your holiday.

2. Don’t overload your drain. If the family’s staying at your place over summer it can put added pressure on your plumbing. Keep a bin for food scraps in the kitchen and sanitary items in the bathroom to divert additional waste from going down the drain.

3. Go easy on your waste disposal unit. As authorised InSinkErator service agents, BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says the units can be working overtime during the festive season. Avoid putting stubborn food scraps in the disposal and run plenty of water.

4. Check your gas bottles. The last thing you want is for the BBQ or stove to run out of gas in the middle of cooking Christmas dinner.

5. If you’re going away, turn off your water mains. This can help prevent potential leaks and flooding – something no one wants to come home to. It also doesn’t hurt to switch off your hot water to save on money.

If anything does go wrong, don’t hesitate to contact BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd, servicing all of Auckland.

“We provide fast, professional and reliable service and workmanship for all things plumbing and gas related.”

Leading Auckland plumbing company BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says customers can have confidence in the products they use to get the job done right.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has this year been investigating claims that New Zealand is a “dumping ground” for dodgy, imported plumbing products.

And with the housing boom in New Zealand, the Master Plumbers Association has received an “influx” of calls from customers concerned about plumbing products and failed fittings.

“Customers deserve better than this,” BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says.

“They should be able to call in a plumber and have confidence that they’re getting quality products, workmanship and service.”

As members of the Master Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers Association, BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd guarantees the quality of the products that staff use and depend on every day.

The company, which services the wider Auckland area, is Quality Assured and backed by the Master Plumbers Guarantee, which protects customers from substandard workmanship.

“Stocking quality products and fittings is central to our core values of trust and reliability. ” BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says.

“We’re all about delivering a finished product that will stand the test of time.”

Customers can safeguard themselves from dodgy products by asking questions of their plumber and avoiding cheap and nasty products.

“We’ve heard of people importing $300 showers and $50 taps. As the saying goes: You get what you pay for.

“Paying a bit more at the beginning can save headaches further down the track.”

With the amount of building work going on in Auckland at the moment, BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says it’s important that customers not only choose a reliable plumber, but a plumber who stocks reliable products.

“If you have any questions about what products are best suited for your plumbing job, give BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd a call. Our experienced team has seen it all before.”

Home renovation TV shows like The Block are not reality, says Auckland Master Plumbers BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd.

The huge range of do-it-yourself TV shows like The Block, House Rules and others that broadcast into homes across New Zealand year-round are giving people a warped idea of home renovations.

“They might call it reality TV, but it’s far from reality,” BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says.

“We see a neat and tidy one-hour episode, not all extra planning and work that goes on when the cameras aren’t rolling.”

Just this week a couple from the The Block Australia complained that editing of the show gave a false representation of what happened, resulting in backlash on social media.

The editing of these shows also gives a false representation of the knowledge and skill required to complete home renovations, particularly plumbing and gasfitting.

“The people on these shows might install a kitchen in an episode. It makes for good TV, but it’s unlikely, risky and potentially unlawful,” BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says.

These so-called reality TV shows are leading to more people adopting the DIY-attitude, which is great, but everyone should know their limits.

Attempting to do major plumbing work because you saw it on TV can be costly and dangerous.

That’s why there’s legislation in New Zealand restricting people to simple DIY plumbing work.

“This is for health reasons,” the Consumer NZ website says.

“An incorrect plumbing connection could allow a back-flow of polluted water into your drinking water.”

If you’re a fan of these hugely-popular home renovation shows then, by all means, continue to enjoy them.

But if you need plumbing, drainage or gasfitting work done at your home, be realistic about it.

Contact a local Master Plumber like the team at Auckland’s BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd who can provide reliable advice, professional service and quality workmanship.

A spike in plumbing callouts following flash flooding in Auckland has revealed the extent of the city’s plumber shortage, industry leaders BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says.

The deluge in early March, dubbed the Tasman Tempest, and more heavy rain this week has caused a sudden surge in plumbing-related callouts.

But with plumbers already under the pump in Auckland, the extreme weather events have stretched resources even further.
BT Plumbing and Gas director Bruce Trenwith told Newshub that plumbers were struggling to meet demand in Auckland.
Plumbing companies could face major financial penalties if they pulled staff from commercial jobs to deal with emergency callouts.

It’s estimated that Auckland needs an extra 600 plumbers just to meet regular demand, but the heavy rain and flooding had compounded the shortage.

BT Plumbing & Gas says that Auckland’s plumber shortage highlights the risk of leaving plumbing jobs that need doing around the house to the last minute.

“The reality is, if something suddenly goes wrong at home, it’s becoming more of a challenge for plumbers to respond immediately.

“Of course, we do our best. But Auckland’s top plumbers are in hot demand right now.”
The advice is to call your trusted plumber or gasfitter as soon as you notice a potential problem.
“It could be a simple fix if you catch it early enough.

“However, if you wait for things to start falling apart before you call a plumber in Auckland, you could be left in the lurch and face costly repairs.”

The staff at BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd has more than 25 years’ plumbing and gasfitting experience under their belts, but they have never seen this level of demand for their services.

With a reputation for reliable advice and quality workmanship, BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd are trusted by Aucklanders to get the job done right.

“While recent demand is piling the pressure on, we want to make sure we continue delivering top service in a timely manner for our valuable Auckland customers.

“You can still give us a call with any plumbing or gasfitting query and be confident that we’ll take the time to help you out.”
